IGA of BC hits milestone of 1.5 million meals donated!

Since FoodMesh and IGA of BC joined forces to give food a second chance back in April 2020, its 22 stores have collectively donated the equivalent of 1.5 million meals to people in our communities.

Every day, IGA of BC staff carefully collect the food the stores are unable to sell, either because it is close to its peak freshness date, or because of aesthetic imperfections, and leave it ready to be collected by a network of hunger-relief organizations located across the province. These organizations then redistribute it to the people in our communities who need it most.

In donating this food to these charities, IGA of BC has:

🍐 kept 891,375 KG of unsalable food out of waste streams
🌱 saved 2,296,171 KG of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere

One of the hunger relief organizations that IGA of BC donates its unsold food to is Potter’s Place Mission in Vancouver. This church has offered sanctuary to hundreds of residents of Vancouver’s downtown eastside since it opened its doors in the late 90s.

Thanks in part to donations it receives from IGA’s West 4th store in Kitsilano, Potter’s Place Mission can serve a wide variety of warm and nutritious meals to its guests, many of whom are facing homelessness, and dealing with mental illness and addiction.
