Meet Laura, FoodMesh’s Head of Finance. When she’s not busy tracking, analyzing and modelling financial information for FoodMesh, chances are you’ll find her on her paddle board or taking in the view at Spanish Banks.

Find out why she could spend her whole life eating nothing but Italian food, and her top tip for keeping her carrots crispy!

When you started working at FoodMesh

August 2020.

What you do at FoodMesh

I track, analyze and model financial information to support FoodMesh’s business strategy.

The top three values that drive you

  1. Respect
  2. Equality
  3. Curiosity

Where you were born

Metz, France

Where in the world have you lived, outside of Canada

I grew up in France, lived in England where I went to university and worked in the US (Washington DC and San Francisco).

Your top tip for reducing food waste

I go to the store often and buy only what I need for a meal or two. And if I happen to get a lot of veggies at once (like from my CSA box), I just cook them all in one go and make salads and bowls for lunch. One tip that I got recently and absolutely love is to store carrots in a container full of water, it will keep them crispy and fresh for days!

Your favourite place to visit in the town/city you currently live

The far end of Spanish Banks – it’s one of the least crowded beaches in the city, and the sunsets there are stunning. I love looking at the outline of the islands and mountains in the distance, it’s very calming.

Your favourite thing about the job

Knowing that what we do at FoodMesh has an impact on our community and environment is what gets me fired up. Every day brings a new challenge and working with a brilliant team to solve it is always very rewarding and motivating.

Your favourite way to use up food in your fridge

I make veggie bowls with everything. I use a few leftover grains, roast the stuff that’s past its prime, blitz the herbs into a dressing and voila! A tasty and healthy dinner.

If you could eat only one cuisine for the rest of your life, it would be…

Italian, no doubt. I love everything about it, the freshness of the veggies, the decadence of the cheese, and oh the rich ice cream.

How you like to recharge

I like to get on my paddleboard and float on the ocean; read a book in a park; take a 10-min nap.

Your favourite quote

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step”
– Martin Luther King, Jr

Who inspires you, and why

My grandma. She had a tough life but always kept a smile on her face. She passed on her strength and kindness to her 5 kids and created a really caring family.
Someone famous? Michelle Obama. I’m a big fan.

The most important lesson you’ve learned in your career to date

Listen. To your team, to your customers, to yourself.

The best advice you were ever given

My mom told me as a kid, “Lookup, you’ll find treasures that you wouldn’t have seen by just staring at the ground.”

To this day, it comes true every time.

A fun fact about you

I ran a marathon just to see if I could do it. I finished, but I will never do it again!

Three words to describe you

Supportive, committed, organized
